Overview
Lambton College asked students from its Training, Development, and Storyboarding course to create an eLearning course to help international students get settled in Canada. The course would be mandatory for new international students, and had to meet Lambton's branding guidelines.
Our class was divided into groups, with each assigned a module on a different topic. Richa Kansal, Aqbal Singh, and I were assigned 'Mental health, addiction and suicide'.
Responsibilities
Project management
Instructional design
Coaching
Graphic design
eLearning development
Problem
Moving to a new country for school can be a stressful experience. Often, students are overwhelmed by work and school demands. Separated from loved ones back home, many are away from home for the first time and living in crowded boarding houses. Culture shock can be intense.
During the pandemic, international students experienced intense social isolation. This led to an increase in mental health disorders and suicide amongst international students in Canada and around the world. Few students accessed mental health supports due to cost, stigma, and lack of awareness.
Target audience
First-year, international students at Lambton College in Sarnia, Ontario
International students at all Ontario colleges.
A high proportion of students from Punjab, India
Solution
eLearning course
Created in Rise 360.
While using Rise was required, it was a logical choice.
Rise courses can be accessed 'on the go'. Fully responsive, students can access learning materials on their cellphones. This makes it easy to complete learning during work breaks and public transit. It also supports students with limited technical skills and access to computers, and those with internet connectivity issues.
